Wizards take on Statesville faculty

The Harlem Wizards, a comedic basketball team, will play Statesville High School faculty members in the school’s gym in a few weeks to raise money for the school’s band.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the band for the Jim Calabrese Honorary Scholarship.

The band is hoping to make at least $1,000 to put toward a scholarship for a student who has been in the band for four years and most exemplifies what it means to be a good band member, according to Band Director Jamie Kincaid.

Three years ago, the school hosted the Harlem Rockets and raised nearly $2,000. Partnerships Coordinator Susie Wiberg said the community had so much fun and wanted to do it again.

“It was so dang much fun,” she said. “This crosses over every age group — it’s an evening out with your family.”

Harlem Wizards President and CEO Todd Davis said fundraising for schools has always been a large part of what the organization does. “It makes us feel good about what we do for a living,” he said.

Kincaid said funding the band takes quite a bit of money. Having extra money helps “us do what’s over and above what’s allotted to us.”

Every year, it’s their plan to be able to award a student $1,000 through this scholarship.

“The more money we can raise, the more money we can give to more kids,” Kincaid said.

TO GO:
Harlem Wizards will play faculty at 7 p.m. April 17. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the door.
