Mooresville voters returned three of four town government incumbents, including Mayor Bill Thunberg, to office Tuesday.

Thunberg got a strong challenge from Larry Gregory, winning by 293 votes (1,358 to 1,065).

“I consider it an honor and privilege to serve as mayor, and I’m grateful and humbled by the results,” the mayor said.

Joining Thunberg in winning re-election were Town 1 Commissioner Mitch Abraham and Ward 2 Commissioner Thurman Houston, who was appointed to the board in June 2006.

But At-Large Commissioner Danny Beaver was ousted in his bid for a third term. Challenger Miles Atkins held off Beaver 1,211 votes to 1,120, according to unofficial results.

In the Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education race for three seats, the winners were former assistant superintendent Roger Hyatt (1,409 votes) and current board members Sue Wilson (1,371) and Larry Wilson (1,263).

Failing in their bids for school board seats were Eddie Karriker (921) and Mark McCulloh (864).

One of the open seats is occupied by Barbara Johnson, who did not seek re-election.

Abraham enjoyed the most lopsided victory of the day, outpolling challenger Carla Fassbender 544 to 247.

Atkins, the only challenger to win a board seat, championed “sustainable and careful development.” An avid proponent of preserving town history, he is manager of driver team relations for Infield Parking, a NASCAR Web site.

Voter turnout was heavier than anticipated in Mooresville, with 14.5 percent of the town’s 17,525 registered voters participating.
