Grey Mills: 3,613 (50.8%)
Karen Ray: 3,499 (49.2%)
unofficial results
Mooresville attorney Grey Mills said he had a pretty good idea that his race against state Rep. Karen Ray for the North Carolina House of Representatives Republican nomination would go down to the wire.
“I knew it was going to be close,” he said shortly after the Iredell County Board of Elections announced the unofficial results. “I just didn’t know how close.”
But Mills’ razor-thin, 114-vote margin - out of 7,172 votes cast - was enough to secure the victory in a hotly contested race.
The primary win was essentially a win for the 95th District seat itself as no Democrats filed for the post.
Mills said the win boiled down to the primary plank of his campaign platform - building Iredell County’s clout in the N.C. General Assembly.
“I think we had a good message,” Mills said. “And I think the majority of voters agreed with that message.”
Mills said often during the race that Iredell’s seven different General Assembly districts - four in the house, three in the senate - had diluted the county’s effectiveness in Raleigh.
On several occasions he accused Ray of being part of the group of representatives who allowed Iredell to have so many districts.
Ray argued that Iredell’s being part of seven districts was a positive thing for the county.
“But our job now is to get the strength back that we lost because of that,” Mills said.
Attempts to reach Ray for comment were unsuccessful.
