Candidate for: Mooresville Graded School Board
Occupation: Scientist in the Corporate Chemistry Department for Duke Energy
Education: Bachelors Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

What are the biggest issues facing your constituency?
The biggest issue is always ensuring a quality education for all students in the district.  This issue affects each student differently, which in turn relates to different issues for the students in the district.  Our ability to provide a quality education with the large growth in the district can affect all students.  Keeping students safe, keeping students in school,  and raising test scores are also big issues.

Of those issues, which do you feel is the most important?
The issue that is the most important is providing a quality education for all students.  If something is affecting our ability to provide that education, it has to be dealt with.

What, if any, prior experience do you have that will help you if elected?
I have been on the Board of Education for 10 years and that experience is very good.  I am a parent.  I try to look at all issues as the parent of the students in every grade and make my decision based on what I would want for my child.  I consider children to be the best natural resource we have and I spend most of my free time volunteering with children.

What is one particular thing you think the council is doing right? Doing wrong?
I think the Board is providing a great quality education for the students in the district.  While I do not like the word wrong, I do think there are things we have not found the right way to correct.  We still need to find ways to keep students in school (both dropouts and more alternatives to suspensions) and continue to increase the test scores until all students are considered to be at grade level.
