A flurry of last-minute filings this morning for the Iredell County Board of Commissioners has created a log jam of 10 candidates—and a rare Democratic primary.
Church Gallyon of Statesville and Eugene Shuffler of Union Grove filed, giving the Democrats five candidates and forcing a May runoff. Those two join Statesville’s Mark Vanek and Mooresville’s Fred Coggins on the Democratic ballot. The three top vote-getters in May will qualify for the November ballot.
Meanwhile, a fifth Republican filed—Gene Houpe of Statesville. He and four others—Mooresville’s Brad Howard, Scott Keadle and incumbent Ken Robertson, and Statesville incumbent Godfrey Williams—will battle in a May GOP primary.
The three leading vote-getters will advance to November against the three Democrats, all seeking a total of three seats on the board.
Longtime GOP commissioner Sara Haire Tice is not seeking re-election.
Candidate filing North carolina elections closed today at noon.
