Candidate for: Mooresville Graded School District
Occupation: Faculty member at Davidson College since 1982, professor of German.  Chair of the Department of German and Russian for most of the 1990s.
Education: B.A. From the University of Alabama 1977, M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana 1978 and 1982 respectively.

What are the biggest issues facing your constituency?
Real estate development and accompanying population growth that affects the schools, perception of favoritism along racial and socio-economic lines, limited emphasis on vocational training in high school.

Of those issues, which do you feel is the most important?
I would not rank them, since they are all of significance.

What, if any, prior experience do you have that will help you if elected?
25 years in higher education has made me familiar with important issues such as appropriate preparation for college and the need for better informed guidance of our college-bound students.

What is one particular thing you think the council is doing right? Doing wrong?
The Board of Education is moving to establish an appropriate meeting time no longer in conflict with the meeting time of the Town Board.  This is an example of increased responsiveness, but it has been a long time in coming.  In general the board of education has not always been responsive to the citizenry that elected it, unless it was forced to be, as in the case of the protests regarding holding classes during the Memorial Day holiday.  Having written the board and the superintendent in the past and never having received a response, I believe a policy of responding to every concern raised by the public should be enacted by the board.
