With election filing now over, Mooresville’s ballot stands at 14 candidates, and all members of both the town and school boards will face at least one opponent in this fall’s election.
Seven seats are available on Mooresville’s town and school boards this fall – four seats on Mooresville’s town board and three seats on the Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education.
All town board members currently holding seats filed to run again: Bill Thunberg filed for the mayoral seat, Danny Beaver filed for the at-large seat, Mitch Abraham filed for the Ward 1 seat, and Thurman Houston, who replaced Franklin Campbell on the board last year, filed for Ward 2.
Gary Lewis and Dennis Hendrix have filed to run against Houston, Miles Atkins has filed to run against Beaver, Larry Gregory, owner of Gregory Financial Services in Statesville, will run against Thunberg, and Lake Norman High School Spanish teacher Carla Fassbender filed to run against Abraham.
The mayoral seat is a two-year term. All commissioner seats are for four years.
Five candidates will also vie this fall for three seats on the MGSD board. Incumbents Sue Wilson and Larry Wilson have filed to run for re-election to their seats, and they will be joined on the ballot by Davidson College professor Mark McCulloh, Mooresville High Guidance Counselor Eddie Karriker, and by former Mooresville Graded School District Assistant Supt. Roger Hyatt, who filed Wednesday.
Barbara Johnson, who is currently finishing her first term on the board, did not file for re-election.
Board of Education terms are for four years and do not require a primary. Those who choose to run for seats will join candidates on the municipal ballot on Nov. 6.
