Sen. Clinton fields calls

Sen. Hillary Clinton is now taking your calls.

“North Carolina for Hillary” volunteers are gathering at phone banks across the state to continue answering more than 6,000 questions that have been submitted since the campaign launched its NCAskMe.com Web site last week.

Phone bank gathering will be held in at the campaign’s offices in Raleigh, Charlotte, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem.

The Clinton campaign also unveiled a new “N.C. Ask Me” Web video to encourage voters to share their questions and concerns with the Democratic presidential candidate. The 30-second video will be distributed to voters across the state.

Carter to field questions

Roy Carter, a Democratic candidate for North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District, will hold a news conference at 12 p.m. today in front of the Wilkes County Schools Administrative Office Building to announce his visionary statement on education.

Carter, a recently retired high school teacher and football coach, will answer questions from the media, citizens and former students and teaching colleagues.

The the administrative offices are on Watkins Lane in North Wilkesboro.

Carter faces a primary election against Statesville business woman Dianne Hamby. The winner of the primary would face incumbent Rep. Virginia Foxx in November’s general election.

Democrats to hold straw poll

The 10th Congressional District Democratic Party will be holding a district-wide rally and straw poll from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newton Conover Civic and Performance Place in Newton.

Several Democrats from across the district and state have have confirmed attendance and each will be given an equal amount of time to address the audience.

Along with political speeches, the rally includes a barbecue lunch and live music for entertainment.

The event will culminate in secret straw poll with results being announced at the event.

District Chairman Tony McEwen said the poll gives candidates and voters a chance to gauge the progress of the various campaigns.

“Strength for a Democratic candidate in this type of more rural setting is certainly a great indicator of which candidates will fare best in the general election,” McEwen said in a release.

Smith to rally in Charlotte

State Sen. Fred Smith, a North Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate, is holding a concert and rally next week in Charlotte featuring country singer Lee Greenwood.
The event will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Charlotte Executive Marriott Park.

Greenwood, best known for his song “God Bless the USA,” will perform a song he wrote especially for Smith’s campaign, called “Good to Great.”

The event is free but donations will be accepted.
