Cocktail backers want issue on Troutman ballot

Efforts to try to recruit national and regional restaurant chains to Troutman were presented in conjunction with a request that the sale of mixed drinks or cocktails be allowed within the town limits. On Thursday night, the Troutman Board of Aldermen approved a consideration for a May voter referendum on that matter to allow Troutman residents to decide.

“Without the ability to sell mixed beverages, a lot of restaurants will not be interested in coming to the Town of Troutman,” said Ted DeLisi, chairman of the Troutman Area Council, an arm of the Statesville Chamber of Commerce.

DeLisi was joined in making the presentation by Statesville Chamber President David Bradley.

Results from a Troutman Council/Stateville Chamber survey polling residents about allowing the sale of mixed drinks in the city came back favorably by a margin of 82 percent, DeLisi said.
The board voted 4-0 to ask the Iredell County election board and ABC Board to place the referendum on the ballot.

“This action is does not allow for the sale of mixed drinks in the city,” Troutman Mayor Elbert Richardson said. “It allows the town’s citizens to vote on whether they want mixed drinks in the Town of Troutman.”
