Madison Thomas, Grade 6, Brawley Middle
I’m a sixth grader living in Iredell County and my view of the county is based on my answers to the following four questions. First, what day-to-day activities and events make up my life in Iredell? Second, what defines the area where I live? Third, what would I like the area where I live to look like in ten or fifty yers from now? Finally, will the county actually look the way I want it to look in the future?
There are a lot of day-to-day activities that make up my life in Iredell County. A normal day to me would be to wake up early in the morning and get dressed for school. I think this year has been my favorite school year ever! I have great teachers and fantastic friends! On Mondays I have volleyball practice. And, on Tuesdays and Fridays I have running club. On the weekends I have volleyball games or my brother has baseball games. That may not sound like much, but it really keeps me busy.
I live in Mooresville which is primarily defined by two things - auto racing and Lake Norman. Mooresville is sometimes called “Race City USA” since it is the home to many of auto racing’s top programs. Mooresville is also located near Lake Norman which is the largest man made lake in North Carolina. About twenty years ago, Mooresville was much smaller, but that changed with the completion of Interstate 77. Now, Mooresville is one of the fastest growing cities in North Carolina. New homes and buildings are popping up all the time. Although growth brings jobs and lots of great people, it also means less tress, more pollution, and more traffic.
In ten or fifty years from now I’d like Iredell to look a lot different. I’d like to see less growth, less traffic, and more trees. I’d like to see less crowded schools and a cleaner lake. Another thing that I would li8ke to see is lower gas prices and greater use of alternative fuels. I want to swim in a clean lake and see less litter and less pollution.
In some cases, Iredell will look the way I want it to look in ten or fifty years from now. In other cases, it will look much different. For example, we may be driving cars that pollute less, but I think there will be a lot more cars on the road and that traffic will continue to grow worse. I believe there will be more homes and buildings and less tress. Hopefully, the lake will be cleaner and our schools will be less crowded.
I know that my answers to the above four questions may be different from yours, but I bet we all want our county to be better in the future.
