On gas prices

It was in July 1963 when Mooresville got its first 28115 zip code. The price of first-class stamps had climbed from 3 cents to 4 cents in August 1958; the price jumped to 5 cents in January 1963 and then soared to 6 cents in January 1968.

During summers after graduation from Mooresville High, I worked at the Templon Mill to earn money for college. There were always jobs to be had in area mills on second or third shift. Working there was a great inspiration to graduate from college.

My parents worked in Charlotte and drove to the Queen City five days a week. This was before Interstate 77 was completed in 1968, so it was down N.C. Highway 115/U.S. Highway 21 with frequent stops. A number of Mooresville people had jobs in Charlotte, but then gas was only around 31 cents a gallon, and that was for the premium grade stuff. Service stations then provided service as well as fuel. They pumped your gas, check the oil level and cleaned the windshield.

It was not long before Interstate-77 made Mooresville/ South Iredell into a bedroom community for Charlotte after it was completed between Charlotte and Mooresville in 1968.
