Bill McCoy, a semi-retried urban-planning professor, has been working on a kind of blueprint for bringing Statesville’s “vision” into focus over the next several years.

The plan includes six unique components: identity; economic development; social issues and values; healthy lifestyle; city recognition; and government support and communication.

Speaking at Monday’s city council meeting, McCoy said these components will help Statesville leaders as the city’s long-expected growth becomes a reality.

“When we first looked at this seven or eight years ago, growth was something on the horizon,” McCoy said. “Now it’s here.”

Statesville leaders expect the city’s population to grow by about 50 percent over the next decade.

But, McCoy said, most residents want Statesville to “retain the unique charms of a small city.”

McCoy also mentioned that Statesville was going to apply to a group called the National Civic League for status as an All American City, a title the city earned from the group in 1997.
