IREDELL IN TRANSITION

A look at our growing county

That Faded Blue-Green Sign

Cassidy Coutinho, 8th grade, Woodlawn School

Everyday, traveling to my small school, I sit on stained seats, gazing out the window. For three years I have passed over these same roads, so familiar with this dull car ride, I scarcely notice the small, blue-green sign on the side of the road, “Welcome to Iredell County”. Who knew these four words on a faded sign, hidden behind trash piles and dead bushes, would make such an impact on my simple life.
When given the topic, “Iredell In the Eyes of Students,” I thought it impossible to write on something I knew nothing about.  As I pondered past experiences, I remembered snapshots of places I’d traversed throughout Iredell and realized that half my life had taken place right here at my school, sixty acres of fun, adventure, success, and dreams of the future; a place that only 130 other students can call their own.

Each morning as I pass the Iredell County sign, everywhere areas of red clay have taken the place of grass, offices and buildings line these streets, traffic is a commonality here, and I am usually late for class. My school day is simple and fun, often a class outside, a local lunch, and funny comments from friends. Life here is joyful and though I start the day passing the faded sign and navigating through streets layered with Carolina clay, a great reward awaits me as I peacefully slip into this little corner of Iredell County.
