My father, Ralph Marion Link was born in Statesville to Robert Dougan Link and Julia Stone Dishman in 1929. They along with his siblings, Robert Wendell (deceased 12/25/08) and Carol Duane moved to Beach Haven, New Jersey when he was around two years old.
My father says the family would come back each summer to Chipley Ford Road around 7 miles or so out of town for a week or two for vacation.
I’ve never had contact nor met my father’s relation in Statesville, except for one e-mail from Hugh Terrell Link, Jr. I had the impression that perhaps there was some sort of family rift back in the day and that they didn’t care too much for my Grandpa Link
Joel Reese at the Iredell Public Library has been a huge help with tracing the murder of my great grandfather James Robert (J.R.) Dishman, through newspaper articles, back in September of 1921.
I enjoy the photos. The first one is breath taking as I live in the flatlands of Wisconsin, I appreciate the rolling hills/mountains.
This is how we landed in Wisconsin.
My father joined the Navy after high school. He met my mother while he was on leave from Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago. They married and settled in Green Bay, WI in 1954 and still reside in their first home that is located just 2 blocks from the infamous Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers.
Surely you have work to be done.
Thank you for your newspaper. You all really make the community come to life with your stories, news, and pictures.
I want to visit Statesville someday and see where my father was born, visit the Trinity United Methodist cemetary where many of my Grandmother, Julia Dishman Link’s family reside, and meet my relatives named Sherrill, Crawford, Sullivan, Link, Little, Plyler (sp?). There’s quite a list.
Have a nice day and thanks again.
Best regards,
Julia A. Link
