Not too long ago, an Iredell County sheriff’s deputy — not a town police officer — was likely the official answering calls inside Troutman town limits late at night.

That’s because the town had just two or three officers, including the chief, and at night, no one was on duty.

Things have changed for Troutman, which is teetering on the edge of unprecedented growth.

Since 1998, the town’s police force has doubled from its five- or six-man squad to 10 officers, and the once small-town force is likely to continue to grow, said Chief Matthew Selves.

In fact, he has plans over the next four to five years to add at least one officer per year in order to deal with the new development coming into the area.
