Artoberfest features local art

Watercolor, pastels, portraits and sculptures are just a few of the mediums you’ll see at Artober 2007 in Mooresville.

“We get both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, and pretty much every style a person could like,” said Pat McGuire, treasurer of the Mooresville Artist Guild of the event, which is sponsored by JEMCO.

McGuire said more than 80 artists entered the contest last year and she hopes for the same turnout this year.

The pieces will be judged on Oct. 1 by Larry Elder, owner of Elder Gallery in Charlotte.

“We were so lucky to get him,” said McGuire. “He is the most charming, elegant gentleman.

“If you picture an upscale gallery owner, he’s definitely who you would see,” she said, laughing.

Artists can enter in four categories: oil/acrylic, watercolor, all other two-dimensional works, such as pencil or pastel, and three-dimensional works, such as collage.

Cash prizes will be awarded, and include $500 for Best in Show, first place in each category gets $200, second receives $100, and finally, third is awarded $50.

The opening reception will be held on Oct. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Depot Art Gallery, where the winners will be announced.

“It’ll be like a big, social party,” said McGuire. “I want to encourage people to come out and see wonderful artists with amazing work to display.”

She added that every piece is for sale, and those who attend should strongly consider buying.

“Why go to a place like Target or Wal-Mart and buy a cheap reproduction, when you can get original art for the same price or less?” she asked. “It’s all very reasonably priced here and we have award-winning artists at the national level.”

The art at Artober will be displayed until October 28. For more information, call the Mooresville Artist Guild at (704) 663-6661.
