If you’re within earshot of Klear Path’s music, Trevor Broadway hopes you get the message.

The 17-year-old Christian rocker says his group strives to help individuals find the word of God.

This weekend, Klear Path will take the stage during Battle of the Bands: Crankin It Up for the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont, an effort to help children in the community.

Concert proceeds will fund a $5,000 college scholarship for a Boys & Girls Club member.

Members of the Mooresville-based band consider the scholarship to be a bonus, Broadway said.

“We want to perform because it’s a great opportunity to get our name out there. We know it’s for a good cause, and we’re in full support of that,” he explained.

Broadway is familiar with the club because during a mission trip, he worked at a Boys & Girls Club in South Carolina for a week.

The concert will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Mac Gray Auditorium at Statesville Senior High School. Seven bands, including The Verge, Furnace Road, Terminal A, Caught in the Line of Fire, Summit and Fortified Underground, are scheduled to perform.

Each band will have a 20-minute set.

Brent Bilyeu, 18, Adam Eddy, 16, and Desmond Myers, 15, formed The Verge two years ago. They said playing at Mac Gray is a great opportunity and will surely bring them exposure, but their reasons for signing on are much deeper.

“We like doing things for charity,” Myers said. “We know people who don’t have the best finances, and we know how important education is.”

The teens feel proud to be able to use their talents for charity.

“Everyone deserves to have a good education,” Eddy added.

Bilyeu said the newly renovated space is a great venue for them to “sound good, look good and have our friends come see us.”

Statesville High junior Sam Hughes organized the concert. He said nearly $4,000 has already been raised.

Hughes said he is organizing the event because he wants to help others. He recognizes not everyone is as fortunate as their peers.

Broadway echoed that sentiment.

“It’s a great chance because there are tons of people who can’t get into college because of expense reasons,” he said.

Klear Path - whose other members are Andrew Nicholson, 14, Shayne Hutchinson, 16, and Trevor’s brother, Taylor “Tater” Broadway, 16 - has been practicing twice a week to perfect their set for this weekend.

The band has been setting up in Berea Baptist Church’s youth building.

“We all have a God-given talent we want to use,” Broadway said. “We’re excited about playing, but our purpose is more than just playing music.”

Klear Path will play all original songs about salvation, forgiveness and grace. Their other performances include one at their church, The Upper Room and various festivals.

The Verge - who call themselves “soul rock” musicians - will be performing three original songs and one cover.

The teenagers practice either in a room at Myers’ home or in their makeshift studio in the garage. They will release their six-track CD, titled “Your Sins,” in March at La Dolce Vita Cafe.
