Daytrippin: Salisbury
![]() |
A warm summer Saturday just calls for adventure and something a little different from the norm. Give in with this fun day trip destination: Salisbury.
Salisbury offers a variety of eclectic shops and lunch spots that make it a perfect place to stroll through downtown. Make it a family trip or a romantic afternoon for two.
Here are some already explored and Navigator-tested suggestions to get your daytrip started:
Shopping:
Okey Dokey General Store — This beautiful old building offers both new and antique wares for your home. Barrels of old-fashioned candy greet customers at the store’s entrance and there is a great selection of iron garden décor. Don’t miss the downstairs, which displays some great antique furniture.
The Salisbury Emporium — There are over 75 dealers housed under one roof at the emporium, making this a great opportunity for finding gifts … and maybe something for yourself. Anything goes with a selection of art, jewelry, pottery, home décor, antiques and more.
Dining:
Spanky’s — This corner diner offers a selection of soups, salads and sandwiches, but the desserts are the real treat. Patrons crowd around the ice cream cooler to choose a flavor and there are other interesting options like the cookie-wich — different cookies and ice cream options are mashed together in a sandwich. Ice cream pie is the real must-try and I suggest the espresso chip coffee flavor.
Hap’s Grill — The smell of the chili will bring you in from all the way down the block at this hot dog joint. Order and go is the game but there are a few stand-up tables outside for an on-the-spot bite. On Saturday at lunch there was standing-room-only with a line out the door.
Wine:
The Village Porter — Only open for three months, the selection numbers 122 beers and 49 wines. These hard-to-find beers aren’t anything you’d pick up at the grocery store and the owner can offer great suggestions based on your tastes. Wine by the glass and single beers are available and there are live bands and beer and wine tastings.
Old Stone Vineyard & Winery — This small winery offers free tours and tastings. Even on a Saturday afternoon, I didn’t feel crowded or rushed and had time to ask questions and receive thorough answers. Their muscadine wines are excellent and I especially suggest the peach and blackberry wines. Learn more at http://www.osvWinery.com.
