ELECTION RESULT: Troutman mixed drink referendum

printer-friendly version

FOR: 392 (57.31%)
AGAINST: 292 (42.69%)

unofficial results

Voters in the Town of Troutman and Davidson Township both approved referendums Tuesday to allow businesses to sell mixed drinks.

Of the 9,301 registered voters in the two Troutman precincts, only 684 weighed in on the referendum, with 392 voting in favor and 292 voting against.

“I think it gives Troutman an opportunity to maybe pattern the growth,” said Troutman Partners for Progress member Maria Haughton, “instead of the growth overtaking us.”

Opponents of the referendum said mixed beverages could lead to higher crime rates and more driving while intoxicated incidents.

“I think it will change the way our town looks,” said Troutman Citizens for Alcohol Prevention Brad Philbeck, a group that opposed the ballot initiative.

“It will change our town. I was hoping that this would not pass ... . We don’t feel defeated. We feel that we did the best we possibly could to show what we feel the truth in the matter.”

In Davidson Township, which is the unincorporated area around Lake Norman, the referendum was overwhelmingly passed with 4,698 voters for and 1,144 against.
