unofficial results
She was the first person to file for the newly-created position of district attorney, and now Sarah Kirkman will be the first district attorney elected by voters in Iredell and Alexander counties.
Kirkman, currently an assistant district attorney for the 22nd Judicial District, easily won the race to become district attorney for the newly-created 22A Judicial District.
She captured more than 55 percent of the vote in Iredell and 75 percent in Alexander.
Kirkman defeated fellow assistant district attorney Alan Martin by more than 4,700 votes in the two counties.
Kirkman received nearly 56 percent of the vote in Iredell, tallying 6,426 votes. In Alexander, unofficial results have Kirkman with 2,058 votes (75 percent).
Martin received about 3,203 votes in Iredell (28 percent) and 496 votes in Alexander (18 percent).
Michael Van Buren, an assistant district attorney in Rowan County, finished in third place with 1,852 votes in Iredell (16 percent) and 195 votes in Alexander (7 percent).
The new district, created last year by the N.C. Legislature, will encompass Iredell and Alexander counties.
All three candidates for the post are Republicans, meaning Kirkman, the winner of Tuesday’s primary, will be the new district attorney.
When filing opened for the position in February, Kirkman was the first to file.
She will take office in 2009.
Martin offered his hope, via e-mail, that the new district attorney will be beneficial to the citizens of Iredell County.
“As a resident of Iredell County, I join my fellow citizens in hoping the new District 22A fulfills its promise of service to the people,” he said.
Martin said he was thankful for the support he received in the election.
“I am deeply grateful to the many people who believe in me and worked hard to support my campaign,” he said.
Neither Kirkman nor Van Buren could be reached for comment.
