unofficial results

Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education members David Cash and Keith Williams retained their seats on the board Tuesday night, fending off challenges from opponents who criticized the current board and administration.

Cash defeated challengers Marshall Stewart and Morris Roseman to keep the District 2 seat, and Williams beat Mark James to keep the District 4 seat for another four years.

The Iredell County Board of Elections Office reported Cash garnered 1,368 votes, or 41.52 percent of the vote. Stewart received 959 votes, and Roseman tallied 536.

“I’m excited about it and appreciate the confidence of the people,” Cash said after the unofficial results were announced.

“I look forward to serving another four years.”

He said he is ready to accept the challenge and continue with the hard work the board is doing.

Williams received 1,699 votes, or 63.14 percent of the vote, to James’ 977 votes, or 36.31 percent of the votes.

Both incumbents fought to keep their positions because they want to be part of the board as it continues to implement plans already in motion.

Now that both members have been able to hold on to their positions, they will continue to work toward their goal of providing sufficient classroom space for a growing student population, increasing teacher supplements and lifting the district to the top 10 in the state, among other goals.

Cash said in the coming years, he wants to continue to create more programs, deal with growth issues and aggressively work on the school facilities plan.

Cash commended his opponents for participating in the race and said their efforts were not in vain.

“We will take their issues to heart as well and continue to work to improve the system,” Cash said.

Although Williams was optimistic from the get-go about his prospects, he made a final push by visiting five of the six precincts Tuesday.

He said he didn’t want to take any votes for granted.

When he ran eight years ago, he did so because he wanted to give back to his community, and now he will be able to do so for another four years.

“I look forward to tackling some of the challenges we have ahead and helping teachers achieve,” he said.
