Houston, Lewis continue to November election

printer-friendly version

MOORESVILLE - Thurman Houston and Gary Lewis led the balloting in Tuesday’s Ward 2 primary for the Mooresville Board of Commissioners, and will face each other in the Nov. 6 general election.

Houston, the incumbent, received 109 votes, while Lewis collected 58. The third candidate, Dennis Hendrix, received 31 votes. Only 198 of Ward 2’s 3,008 registered voters – or 6.5 percent – participated in the primary.

Though disappointed by the turnout, Houston said his strong showing “made me feel like maybe I’m doing something right.”

Likewise noting Houston’s vote total, Lewis said: “I think this shows a picture of what’s ahead of me.”

Houston and Lewis will join 11 other candidates in the November election.

Seven seats are available on Mooresville’s town and school boards this fall – four seats on Mooresville’s town board and three seats on the Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education.

In the mayor’s race, incumbent Bill Thunberg, currently completing his first term, will face off against Larry Gregory, owner of the Statesville-based Gregory Financial Services.

Incumbent Danny Beaver, who is finishing his second term on the board, will vie for the at-large commissioner seat against Miles Atkins, manager of driver team relations for Infield Parking, a NASCAR Web site.

In the Ward 1 race, incumbent Mitch Abraham, finishing his first term, will face off against Lake Norman High School Spanish teacher Carla Fassbender.

The mayoral seat is a two-year term. All commissioner seats are for four years.

Five candidates for the Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education will also be on the Nov. 6 ballot for three seats on the MGSD board.

Incumbents Sue Wilson and Larry Wilson have filed to run for re-election to their seats, and they will be joined on the ballot by Davidson College professor Mark McCulloh, Mooresville High Guidance Counselor Eddie Karriker, and former Mooresville Graded School District Assistant Superintendent Roger Hyatt.

Barbara Johnson, who is currently finishing her first term on the board, did not file for re-election.

Board of Education terms are for four years and do not require a primary.
