McHenry claims Sigmon’s ads ‘defamatory’

printer-friendly version

It’s getting ugly in the 10th Congressional District Republican race.

How ugly? The kind of ugly that includes law firms screaming “cease and desist.”

Lance Sigmon, who is running for the 10th District’s GOP nomination recently received such a notice from the Hickory law offices of Williams, Williams & Eustice acting on behalf of incumbent Rep. Patrick McHenry.

The letter alleges that television and Web site ads launched by Sigmon contain “defamatory statements” against McHenry that “are not verifiable and have been found to be inaccurate.”

Among the statements made by Sigmon that McHenry claims are false are:
- An allegation that McHenry compromised troop locations by placing a video on the internet;
- That the video led to the death of two Americans; and
- McHenry could “face ten years in prison” because of his actions.

The notice points out that “it is a Class 2 Misdemeanor to use defamatory statements against any candidate in political campaign advertisements.”

In other news, McHenry will be the featured speaker Friday at a meeting of the The Iredell County Republican Women at Fat Boy’s Restaurant in Mooresville.

The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. and McHenry will give a “Washington Update.”

Howard Dean’s brother to stump for roy Carter
Jim Dean, brother of Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, will be the featured speaker at a Roy Carter Campaign Rally tonight in Winston-Salem.

The rally is a landmark event for the Roy Carter for Congress campaign and for the 5th Congressional District.

According to the Carter campaign, the event “marks the first time in recent memory” that a national party leader has come to the 5th Congressional District for “the specific purpose of supporting and endorsing a Democratic candidate for Congress.”

Jim Dean is chairman of Democracy for America, a political action committee founded by Howard Dean.

Carter is in a primary against Statesville businesswoman Diane Hamby.

The winner takes on incumbent Rep. Virginia Foxx in the November general election.

Sen. Hillary Clinton returns to North carolina today
A day after her husband took a quick tour of some smaller cities in North Carolina — including a scheduled stop in Statesville — Sen. Hillary Clinton will make some stops in the state today.

Clinton will hold campaign events in Jacksonville, Fayetteville and Asheville and will be joined on the campaign trail by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retired Gen. Hugh Shelton.

Clinton trails Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama in North Carolina by more than 20 percentage points, according to most polls.

Jim Neal, Kay Hagan pick up endorsements
Democratic U.S. Senate candidates Jim Neal and Kay Hagan both garnered newspaper endorsements recently.

Neal received the endorsement of the Independent Weekly, the largest independent newspaper in North Carolina. “On the issues, there’s a clear progressive choice in the Democratic primary: Chapel Hill businessman Jim Neal is our pick to take on Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole come November,” the paper writes.

Hagan was endorsed by both the Charlotte Observer and Winston-Salem Journal in the past week.
