Two women file for Pete’s seat

printer-friendly version

The Statesville City Council has not exactly been what you would call an equal opportunity employer.

Following the recent resignation of A.E. “Pete” Peterson, Flake Huggins is the only African American.

Peterson and Huggins are only the second and third black men, respectively, to serve on the council.

But, as far as gender goes, it may be even worse.

Presently Mayor Pro Tem Paula Steele is the only woman on the city’s governing board.

Some of that may change with a two filings, Monday, for Peterson’s Ward 3 seat.

Doris A. Allison and Bonita Eisele, both political newcomers, threw their hats in the ring for the vacant slot.

Allison said said the sex of the person filling the seat did not matter so much as the person’s desire to get things done.

“My passion is for people and for my community,” said Allison, 48. “I want to be a servant of the people and bring the concerns of the community to the council and help build a relationship between the people and government.”

Eisele was less philosophical about her reasons for filing.

“I think I can help with a lot of things going on in the city,” she said.

Eisele, 56, owns Bonita’s Alterations tailor shop. She said she did not wish to comment yet on anything specific regarding the current council or any trouble spots she may see there.

“I don’t want to get into any of that right now,” she said. “But I will as the campaign goes on. Right now I am excited about it and I know there is a lot I can give back.”

Because Ward 3 became vacant when it did, the winner will serve out the remainder of Peterson’s term.

One of the candidates may get a leg up, however. The council said it would wait until the end of the filing period to determine which way to move on on appointing a person to fill the seat until December, when the winning candidate will be sworn in.

Mayor Costi Kutteh said the slate of candidates filing for the seat was a good place to start in finding the right person to appoint.

Also on Monday Huggins filed to hold on to his Ward 6 seat for a second term and current Troutman Mayor Pro Tem William L. Bowser filed to keep his at-large post.

Filing period opened last Friday and runs until noon on July 20.
