Wards 3, 6 to be decided Tuesday

printer-friendly version

If next Tuesday’s election goes a certain way, by this time next week, there could well be a new member of the Statesville City Council, and another current councilman could become a lame duck.

The council voted last month to allow the winner of the Ward 3 race to be sworn in soon after a winner emerges from the city election, which is Tuesday.

But the council did not set a solid date to bring the winner on board, and it could choose to do so at its pre-agenda meeting next Thursday.

The Ward 6 race looks to be a tight one.

Incumbent Flake Huggins has touted his work on the council over the past eight years as a reason to keep him there.

But challengers Juan “J.D.” Williams and Donnetta Lavette Watkins believe not enough has been done in the ward in the way of crime reduction, economic development and community identity.
