City seats up for grabs at polls today

The issues have been debated, the yard signs long planted, the campaign glad-handing and back-slapping done and the promises all made.

Wards 3, 6 to be decided Tuesday

If next Tuesday’s election goes a certain way, by this time next week, there could well be a new member of the Statesville City Council, and another current councilman could become a lame duck.

The council voted last month to allow the winner of the Ward 3 race to be sworn in soon after a winner emerges from the city election, which is Tuesday.

Ward 3 candidates differ on top issue

The Ward 3 seat has been empty since mid-June, when longtime Councilman A.E. “Pete” Peterson resigned for health reasons. Three people are running for the vacated spot.

The two most visible candidates see two different topics at the top of the ward and city’s to-do lists.

Two women file for Pete’s seat

The Statesville City Council has not exactly been what you would call an equal opportunity employer.

Following the recent resignation of A.E. “Pete” Peterson,  Flake Huggins is the only African American.
