Candidate for: Troutman Board of Aldermen
Occupation: Elementary school teacher
Education: B.S. in elementary education; Appalachian State University and Gardner-Webb University
Political Affiliation: I try to base my vote on the person and the issues, but I am a registered Democrat.
What are the biggest issues facing your constituency?
One of the biggest issues facing my constituency is obviously growth, and the effect growth is having on our roads, schools, and infrastructure. Another issue is our dependency on other towns to meet our sewer/water treatment needs. I also think public safety is an issue in Troutman. We have a lovely sidewalk through town, with few crosswalks or pedestrian crossing signs giving access to the sidewalk from adjacent streets. I believe in being proactive, not reactive. Many residents in Troutman could walk instead of drive to do business if walking was safer in Troutman.
Of those issues, which do you feel is the most important?
I think all of the issues have equal importance. We have a diverse population in Troutman with diverse needs. Everyone’s point of view should be considered.
What, if any, prior experience do you have that will help you if elected?
I do not have any public political experience. However, I am a Christian, a daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher and friend. I care about people. I have good communication skills and more importantly I am a good listener. I want to be a voice for all of the Troutman people, not just a select few.
What is one particular thing you think the board is doing right?
I think the existing Troutman town board has done a good job moving Troutman into the 21st century. They have increased communication to residents via the Internet, telephone and the sign near the depot. I think they are doing everything they can to promote community involvement and unity. This is evident in the success of the Fourth of July parade.
What is one particular thing you think the board is doing wrong?
I don’t think enough is being done to improve the road conditions in the Englewood neighborhood. The condition of those streets is disgraceful.
