What are Statesville’s tourist attractions?

imageThe Statesville Convention & Visitors Bureau is rethinking how it markets the city (for the story, click here). What do you think Statesville has that would attract visitors?

Signal Hill Mall could be a tourist attraction.  It wouldn’t be the type of attraction that offers a variety of stores or the shopping experience that one would expect in a mall, but rather the sort of destination that someone could view as a relic from the past.  People could roam the empty corridors, admiring the ghosts of stores and water flowing through fountains that are no longer there.  Some may even appreciate the 1970’s decor that has remained unchanged since that decade so many years ago.  I’ve had friends visit me from other cities, and I always take them to Signal Hill Mall so they can experience it for themselves.  The responses are always something to the effect of “Wow”, or “This is unbelievable”.  It truly is a unique experience, that with the right marketing strategy, could attract tourists from all over the state. Just check out the website, http://www.signalhillmall.com.  It’s loaded with satire.

I am disappointed that Statesville has not embraced the Lake Norman area.  South Iredell county is clearly a heavy growth area, but Mooresville has aggressively captured all consumer spend.  When did you last drive into Statesville on Shelton Ave?  It is not an attractive entrance to the city, and certainly has been unsuccessful in capturing the large discretionary income from the lake dwellers.

Downtown Statesville would also be a perfect location for an annual music/arts festival.  Yes, Statesville could be a destination with the proper leadership and change management.  Make it happen!

Statesville has nothing to offer in the way of
tourist attractions! I have lived here all my life
and have never seen anything interesting happen here. The children have nothing to do in this town! They can’t even cruise the streets anymore.
they have even been refused a skate park!!The civic center is useless as far as our young are concerned! It is used for stuffed shirt big wheels and too expensive for ordinary people to enjoy! Lakewood park is used for trysts of the unspeakable kind and not fit for our children. WAKE UP STATESVILLE --YOU ARE WAY BEHIND!!!

Statesville has three historic sites. One is Fort Dobbs just north of town. Work is in progress to restore the Fort. Two is the Vance House where Gov. Vance brought his family and set up the State Capitol and was arrested at the end of the Civil War. Third is the site of the hanging of Tom Dula that was made famous around the world. Little is said about these places and events by our city leaders and Tourist Center. Most adults and our school children aren’t informed about the only events that drew attention to Statesville in our early history.
