Big wins highlighted successful softball season
By Brian Meadows
With its 1-0 win in the first round of the 3A state playoffs, West Iredell’s softball team eliminated Southwestern Conference champion R-S Central, a club with 18 wins.
The Warriors stormed into the postseason having won 10 of 11, a run that included a 2-0 upset of North Piedmont Conference champion East Rowan.
But neither of those triumphs qualifies as their signature win, Warriors center fielder Kendayl Waugh said. No, that came last month in Mt. Ulla against one of the traditionally strongest pro-grams in the area.
“Beating West Rowan, I think, was our best win, because we hadn’t done it before,” said Waugh, one of two seniors who were 0-6 against the Falcons prior to their 7-3 victory April 18.
“Even though we beat East Rowan, and they were No. 1 (in the conference), it still didn’t feel as good as beating West Rowan.”
West Iredell lost 5-0 in the second round to Enka — which advanced to the quarterfinals Tuesday — to finish 16-7.
The Warriors have a wealth of talent returning in 2009, headlined by standout pitcher Hannah Pennell, a rising senior.
Elizabeth Walden provides tremendous versatility, and Kaylyn Chapman and Amber Miller are solid infielders capable of delivering timely hits.
Kara Dawkins, Mary Keever and Hannah Withers were great additions this season. Withers, a freshman, brings power to the plate and could be a long-ball hitter for the long haul.
“Look out for us next year,” Warriors coach Tiffany Haynes said.
