BASEBALL: Mooresville 6, Newton Foard 4
Blue Devils advance to second round to face W. Rowan
From staff and wire reports
NEWTON—On the strength of a three-run, first-inning home run Friday by Dylan West, Mooresville defeated Newton Foard 6-4 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
The Blue Devils (19-5), the second-place finisher in the North Piedmont Conference, collected the victory thanks to five runs in the first two innings and a seven-strikeout performance from pitcher Aubrey Meadows.
Meadows, who allowed only six hits, earned the win and impressed Mooresville head coach Jeff Burchett in the process.
“Aubrey gets stronger as the game goes on,” Burchett said.
Foard starting pitcher Chad Rothlin collected three hits and one RBI, striking out four in a losing effort for the Tigers (16-8), who tied for first in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference.
“Mooresville was the better team in the end,” Foard coach Marcus Greer said.
Trailing 5-0 in the third, the Tigers plated two runs courtesy of an Andrew Wyant RBI and a fielding error, but a comeback wasn’t in the books, despite Rothlin’s RBI double in the fourth inning and Gage Ward’s RBI single in the seventh.
Mooresville will host West Rowan in the second round Tuesday. West Rowan (15-10), the No. 5 seed from the NPC, upset South Piedmont Conference top seed Marvin Ridge (19-4) 2-1 in the first round.
West Rowan spoiled Mooresville’s Senior Night in the regular-season finale Monday with its 5-4 victory.
“I think our entire team is looking forward to it,” Burchett said.
