Blue Devils advance to sectional final

It’s rare to call a 7-4 game a pitcher’s duel, but it was Aubrey Meadows’ effort on the mound Tuesday that helped lead Mooresville past Kernersville Glenn 7-4 in the third round of the 3A state baseball playoffs.

Meadows came on in relief with a 7-4 lead and runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the fourth and promptly walked his first batter to load the bases. However, he struck out Brandon Harrison to end the inning, then allowed only two baserunners over the final three innings to close out the win.

“Aubrey is our senior leader — and he stepped up and carried us down the stretch,” Blue Devils coach Jeff Burchett said.

Meadows’ pitching was crucial, because Glenn’s Kevin Parrish pitched three innings of one-hit relief to keep the Bobcats in the game.

Both teams were forced to use their relievers due to quick starts by both offenses.

The Blue Devils (21-5) started the first with a leadoff walk by Nathan Abraham, who then stole second. After Harrison struck out Billy Nantz, Jon Crucitti also walked to put runners on first and second. Meadows followed with a first pitch double to the left-center gap for a 2-0 Mooresville lead.

The Blue Devils added three runs in the third. Crucitti led off with a walk, stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Meadows followed with another walk to force Harrison from the game.

Dylan West greeted reliever Jonathan Shelton with a single to left, then Aaron Meadows followed with another single to left to score West. Beaver worked an eight pitch at-bat to hit another single to left to score Aaron Meadows and put Mooresville ahead 6-2.

Mooresville tacked on another run in the fourth as Crucitti singled to center, stole second, then scored on a West single for a 7-2 lead.

“They really kept us out of our normal style of play,” Glenn coach John Fowler said.

Mooresville will face North Piedmont 3A foe East Rowan in Tuesday’s sectional final. The Blue Devils are 0-2 this season against East Rowan.
