BASEBALL: Mooresville 11, West Rowan 10 (8 innings)

Blue Devils mount huge late rally to clip Falcons

Mooresville’s Billy Nantz slides safely into second base Tuesday during the Blue Devils’ playoff game against West Rowan. Mooresville scored three runs in the seventh inning to force extras, then got the win in the eighth inning when Nantz scored on a double by Jon Crucitti.

Mooresville sophomore Billy Nantz crossed home plate standing up and braced himself for the barrage of teammates pouring out of the dugout.

Jon Crucitti stopped at second base with his hands on his knees and then fell on to his back and flapped his arms, creating an impromptu dirt angel.

The two sophomores lifted the Blue Devils to a wild come-from-behind 11-10 victory in eight innings Tuesday over West Rowan in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

With two outs and Nantz on first, Crucitti ripped a 2-1 fastball to the centerfield wall. Nantz, who was stealing second base, easily scored, sending the Mooresville bench onto the field.

“Win,” Crucitti said when asked what was going through his mind. “Just win. Their pitcher stayed away most of the night with his slider. I was thinking fastball and just ... wow.”

Mooresville will play either Kernersville Glenn or Jamestown Ragsdale in the third round Friday.

Senior Aubrey Meadows picked up the win for Mooresville in a relief appearance.

Meadows, who pitched a complete game in Friday’s first-round contest, went 2 2-3 innings, giving up three runs and striking out five. He struck out three batters in the top of the eighth to keep the score tied.

The victory spoiled a gutsy effort by West Rowan.

The Falcons trailed 5-0 after the first inning but tied the game at 7 with a five-run fourth inning.

West Rowan right fielder Carlos Batista blasted a first-pitch fastball over the left field wall in the sixth inning for a three-run homer that gave West Rowan a 10-7 lead.

But Mooresville wasn’t done. The Blue Devils coaxed three walks in the bottom of the seventh and Brett Compton’s two-out single allowed Aaron Meadows to score the tying run.

Chris Beaver was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch-runner Ian Walters was caught in a rundown, but that allowed Nantz to get on first and ultimately score the winning run.

“This is just a great bunch of guys,” Mooresville coach Jeff Burchett said. “Whether we were fielding or got good pitching or had a clutch hit, these guys didn’t want to pack it in. But give all the credit to West Rowan, they were down by five runs on two different occasions. They put it on us and we answered.”
