Blue Devils turn focus to cross country title
By Brad Norman
Mooresville’s athletes soaked in the moment Friday minutes after winning the program’s second consecutive 3A state track and field championship.
Meet MVP Jamel Allison chatted on his cell phone with his three medals draped around his neck.
Senior Jake Deaton, wearing a huge pair of sunglasses, struck various poses for the cameras clicking away.
And Tommy Ryan walked around with three fingers in the air, a tribute to Mooresville’s triple crown this season — winning state titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
Coach Michael Serefine absorbed the moment too, but also quickly turned his thoughts to the impending cross country season.
“We won the three state titles this year and, going back to last season, five of the last six state running titles,” Serefine said. “With a little luck, hopefully it will be six in the fall.”
Mooresville will lose senior and front-runner Patrick Campbell, but may still be the favorite to win the program’s third consecutive state cross country title.
Joseph Newman, Graham Sledge, Josh Cox and Jordan Sledge all earned points at the 3A championship meet for the Blue Devils last year, and all return.
