BASEBALL: East Rowan 5, Mooresville 4

Devils fall after stunning rally

By Brad Norman

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s dangerous offense came alive just in time to save its season.

Trailing by four runs entering the final inning, the Mustangs scored five times without registering an out and stunned Mooresville with a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind victory Tuesday in the West Regional semifinals.

“This was probably one of the best comebacks I’ve ever been a part of,” said former Statesville coach Brian Hightower, who now leads East Rowan. “It was gut-check time for those kids.”

The final tally in the seventh inning for the Mustangs (26-2) was two hit batters, one walk, one intentional walk and two singles. Starting pitcher and leadoff batter Justin Roland scored on a wild pitch to complete the comeback and was buried under a wave of East Rowan players sprinting from the dugout.

“We pitched out of jam after jam,” Mooresville coach Jeff Burchett said. “We got out of so many jams, we just couldn’t get out of one more. There was nothing we could do to stop it. But I’m very proud of my boys. What a joy it was to coach them.”

Mooresville senior Aubrey Meadows was nothing short of brilliant the first six innings. He worked his way out of several tough spots and allowed just four hits entering the seventh. He lasted five batters in the final frame before being replaced by Chris Beaver.

Nursing a 1-0 lead, the Blue Devils (21-6) snuffed a potential rally in the fifth inning. With a runner on third, one out and batter Austin Shull in a 1-2 count, East Rowan tried a squeeze play. Meadows’ pitch was outside, Shull could not get the bunt down and catcher Aaron Meadows tagged out Noah Holmes at the plate.

“That showed something,” Burchett said, who added he was not surprised at the call. “Aubrey was in total command. They knew they had to get a run some way.”

The way East Rowan finally got those runs was a bit unconventional, but it was enough to advance to the regional finals and end Mooresville’s season.

“You can’t forget all we accomplished this season,” Burchett said. “It was a history-making season. East Rowan will represent our conference well. I hope they win it all.”
