Event a leaping pad for Cannon

By Brad Norman

For the first time at a track meet this year, Mooresville field athlete Aisha Cannon was a bit nervous before heading down the runway on her first attempt at the triple jump.

That’s to be expected, though.

Cannon was one of several elite high school athletes from around the nation Friday to filter through Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T for the Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Just a rising junior, she was also one of the youngest.

“Yeah, I was nervous coming in,” Cannon said with a smile. “There are some really good jumpers here.”

Seeded in the first of four flights in the triple jump event, Cannon scratched all three of her preliminary attempts and did not qualify for the championship flight. Charaschiesa Lockhart of Dallas won the event with a jump of 41 feet, ½ inch.

“I really wanted to jump over 38 feet,” said Cannon, who was just an inch or two past the line on her third attempt. “That was definitely my goal.”

That’s not to say it wasn’t a worthwhile day for Cannon.

After the three attempts in her flight, Cannon dutifully sat in the bleachers and observed the next three flights and then the championship set of jumps. That’s more than three hours of sitting and watching, observing and learning.

“After my flight, I was happy to watch the rest of it,” Cannon said. “A lot of people have a lot of speed coming down the runway. They really reach for it. They get up and get their legs out. It was good to see that.”

Cannon made a full day out of the event and soaked in the experience.

She woke up at 6 a.m. and left Mooresville shortly thereafter with her mother. Cannon checked in as early as possible and then limbered up and observed other athletes until her event started around 1:30 p.m.

“I got up here when it first opened, which is why I get up so early,” Cannon said. “We wanted to get my information packet and everything. I didn’t know a lot of what was going on, like when I was supposed to check in and where. So we got here early.”

Cannon got better in the triple jump year as her high school season progressed this year and she expects to return to nationals next year.

She won the 3A West Regional with a leap of 36 feet, 4 inches, which was her best of the season at that point. Cannon followed that up with an enormous improvement the next week, jumping 37-11 to finish fourth in 3A state meet, an event also held at Irwin Belk Track.

“This was still a good experience,” Cannon said. “I am looking forward to next year, and competing here again next year and actually taking part. I’m excited already about coming back.”

Cannon was the only Mooresville participant at Friday’s events. Jamel Allison was expected to compete in the triple jump and team with Akeem Black, Antron Parker and Jjshaun Pinkston in the 4x100-meter relay.

They were not in attendance and not listed on official meet sheet of participants. Attempts to contact Blue Devils coach Michael Serefine were unsuccessful.
