Football players test themselves at combine

By Brian Meadows

Nineteen Statesville football players attended a recent Shrine Bowl combine.

“We had some kids that tested real well,” Greyhounds football coach Randall Gusler said.

Not the least of which were 6-foot, all-county defensive back Paul Nichols and bulldog running back Andre Shepherd, both of whom have drawn interest from East Carolina and James Madison, according to Gusler.

Nichols ran the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds and the shuttle run in 4.3 seconds. The junior posted a 34-inch vertical leap.

Nichols bench pressed 185 pounds 20 times at the All-Star combine in Greensboro last weekend.

Shepherd did 24 reps at the same weight. He also ran the 40 in 4.55 and the shuttle run in 4.4 at the Shrine Bowl combine.

“A lot of people are very impressed with his speed and his size,” Gusler said of Shepherd. “At 5-7, 190, he’s very well put together.”
