Freshman Stein comes up big for Greyhounds
By BRIAN MEADOWS
Several freshmen on Statesville’s girls soccer team made an immediate impact this season, but perhaps none more than Natalie Stein.
And that was a good thing, because the Greyhounds needed a goalkeeper. Sophomore Kathryn Vance, who manned the Statesville net as a freshman, was shelved with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Stein filled in and was “a natural” at the position, Statesville coach Jennifer Husbands said.
“She just came so far this season,” Husbands said.
Eight of Statesville’s 11 wins were by shutout, and Stein held third-ranked Lake Norman to four goals in two games. Lake Norman had 110 goals to its credit entering Saturday night’s 3A state quarterfinals game against unbeaten Marvin Ridge.
“She did lots and lots of awesome things,” Husbands said. “She’s just an awesome goalie.”
Still, Husbands predicts Stein and Vance will compete for the starting job next season.
“I’m sure they’ll both step it up,” she said. “(The competition) will be very good for the two of them.”
