Greyhounds duo captures state title
FROM STAFF REPORTS
BURLINGTON — Statesville’s Luke Gillis and Tripp Hawkins won the 3A state doubles championship Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.
The tandem defeated Charlotte Catholic’s Michael Huber and David Anderson in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1. Gillis and Hawkins needed three sets in the title match, but were able to prevail 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 over Southeast Guilford’s Evan Hurley and Michael Sandman.
At the beginning of the season Statesville tennis coach Mike Williams said he could see the potential for Gillis and Hawkins to accomplish what they did Saturday.
“I’m definitely proud of them,” Williams said.
Gillis, a senior, and Hawkins, a junior, finished the season with a 14-2 doubles record. They also won the 3A West Regional title.
This marks the second straight year Statesville has produced a state champ in the individual tournament.
Last year, Preston Spencer won the 3A singles title.
Also Saturday, Lake Norman’s Trey McKee came one step short of the singles title match, falling to Hickory’s Luke Synn 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.
