Hammond set to compete in prestigious regional tournament

BY BRAD NORMAN

What a difference a year makes.

At this point in 2007, Lake Norman’s Hayley Hammond was vigorously rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament, wondering if she would have to miss her junior year of golf.

Twelve months later, Hammond is at the tail end of a whirlwind summer, which will come to an end this weekend at a prestigious tournament in Danville, Va.

The Lake Norman senior has been on the links all over the region, honing her game, winning tournaments and trying to impress college coaches.

“It’s been pretty hectic,” Hammond said. “You blink and you miss it. It’s been a blur, but really fun. It’s been a lot better than last summer.”

Hammond’s last obstacle before heading back to school — and playing another full golf season — is the Mid-Atlantic Challenge, which pits eight of the Carolinas’ best players against a squad comprised of golfers from Virginia and Maryland.

Hammond was named to the team after winning the N.C. Junior Golf Champion-ship on June 20. She was a perfect 5-0 in the match-play event.

Following that showing, Hammond won the Rowan Junior Open Golf Championship and attended a college golf combine on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

“It was interesting,” Hammond said. “It was the first time I’ve ever done a combine.”

Hammond and other golfers played several holes in match-like situations, but also engaged in specific drills. Some of those included hitting out of bunkers, putting and hitting certain targets with chip shots.

“It was pretty scary at first,” Hammond said. “Everybody is watching you, and you have this number on your hat that says who you are, so you’re kind of singled out.”

Hammond hit the road again Friday morning to make the drive up to Danville. The competition begins today at Danville Golf Club with four-ball match play.

Two players from the Carolinas will compete against two players from the other team in a match-play format. Each player has her own ball and plays all holes — the lowest score among the teammates per hole is that team’s score.

Singles match play will take place Sunday, the final day of the event.

“I would just love to represent the Carolinas well and not let my teammates down,” Hammond said. “I just want to play well and be helpful to the team.”

Hammond wants to be helpful to her other team as well — the Wildcats.

As a three-time state qualifier and clear leader for Lake Norman, she hopes to help the golf program reach the state tournament.

“I really want to make it as a team,” Hammond said. “I’ve been there individually, and I’d like to be able to help all of Lake Norman, team-wise. And I’d like to finish top-five. That would be nice, too.”
