Hammond wins state junior golf title

From staff reports

Lake Norman’s Hayley Hammond outlasted 33 other golfers to win the 41st annual North Carolina Junior Girls championship this weekend in Greenville.

Hammond defeated Wilming-ton’s Jessica Hook 2 and 1 in Friday’s championship of the match-play tournament.

“Oh it’s great, but I was nervous in that last match,” Hammond said. “She won the first hole, and I was like ‘Oh crap, this isn’t going well already.’ But I was able to take the lead after that.”

Hammond quickly buried two consecutive birdie putts and led by three holes after 10.

Hook won three of the next five holes to square the score before Hammond won holes 16 and 17 to clinch the title.

“We were both in the fairway off the tee on 17,” Hammond said. “She shot first and yanked her approach shot over the green to the left. My hands were really shaking on my next shot, but I put it a few feet over the green and putted close to the hole.”

Hammond, a two-time R&L county golfer of the year, is a rising senior and the No. 1 player for the Wildcats.

She’s known for both her drives off the tee and iron play, but sinking putts was what clinched the junior championship.

“Surprisingly, it was my putting that really was working,” Hammond said. “Normally, I’m not all that great of a putter. I was just so solid from 10 feet in and was making those 25- and 30-footers sometimes. That helped a lot.”

The course was also suited to her strengths. Bradford Creek Golf Course is a par-72 course that played at 6,010 yards.

“It was really flat and really wide open,” Hammond said. “It was definitely better for me because I can get a little erratic off the tee sometimes.”

Hammond went 5-0 during the tournament and played four matches in two days to get to the championship.

With the win, she qualified to play on the North Carolina team that will challenge Virginia and Maryland golfers Aug. 9 and 10 in Kannapolis.

“That’s going to be exciting,” Hammond said. “I’ve never done anything like that before.”

Hammond hopes the win and the opportunity to play with — and against — some of the region’s top golfers in August gives her some momentum entering the North Piedmont 3A fall schedule.

Hammond will defend the individual championship she won last year and also has a chance to qualify for the 3A state championship match for the fourth consecutive year.

She also aspires to play golf in college.

“I sure hope (winning) helps with that,” Hammond said. “It seems like it should. I hope it opens some doors with college, but we’ll see.”
