LNHS softball team looks to build on first playoff appearance
By Brian Meadows
Ten of Lake Norman’s 13 players earned their first varsity letter in softball this year. Of the three who had already lettered, only one was a senior.
“So not only do I think we were young, we were pretty inexperienced, too,” coach Steve Rankin said. “I really thought we were a playoff team, though.”
They were.
For the first time since the program began in the 2002-03 school year, Lake Norman qualified for the playoffs.
A late-season hitting slump carried over and hurt the Wildcats’ chances of advancing. They finished 8-13 after a 5-0 first-round loss to Hickory Ridge.
Regardless of the ending, Rankin believes the experience bodes well for the team.
“It can only help,” he said. “They see what their competition is capable of. We’re not anywhere close to East Rowan, Northwest Cabarrus, and those teams. We’ve closed the gap.”
Lake Norman only loses third baseman Katheryn Hauser, a staple in the lineup for four years.
Key returners include Kim Bessent and Jo Beth Wright, a pair of sturdy middle infielders, and outfielders Hannah Littlefield and Sara Marshall, whom Rankin called “two bright stars for the future.” Littlefield, a freshman, had two hits in her first playoff game.
