NOTES: Hounds have luxury to scout in Week 1 of football season
By Brian Meadows
This will be the third year in a row Statesville has been idle opening night of the high school football season.
The Greyhounds have an extra week to prepare for their Aug. 29 season opener against Hickory, which won all 13 of its games before losing in the third round of the 2007 playoffs.
Don’t think for a second that head coach Randall Gusler and his coaching staff isn’t going to make good on that spare time, especially with the other five Iredell County teams in action Aug. 22.
They will be scouting that first Friday night.
“We spread our coaches out, and we all go take a ballgame,” Gusler said. “North (Iredell) and South (Iredell) play each other, so we get to see both of those with one coach. … In reality, we’ll probably see over half of our schedule that first Friday night.
“Getting to go out and see them in person, not just on film, really helps.”
Before Hickory comes to Greyhound Hollow, Statesville will scrimmage twice. The Greyhounds are scheduled to take part in the Alexander Central jamboree with ACHS, Lawndale Burns and Newton Foard, before scrimmaging again Aug. 21 against Southeast Guilford.
YOU KNOW THE DRILL
Shannon Ashley spent part of Friday night’s first football practice working on the new offense the Raiders will run under their first-year head coach.
The primary purpose of the initial practice, though, is to get the athletes “acclimated to the routine,” Ashley said.
That includes the dreaded conditioning drills.
To the chagrin of players, the Raiders wrapped up their workout Friday with a series of sprints, appropriately dubbed “gassers.”
“Nobody likes conditioning,” Ashley said with a grin. “You know how that goes, it’s one of those things you’ve got to do.”
WELCOME, ROOKIES
A little more than 60 percent of the athletes who attended West Iredell’s first football practice Friday were freshmen or sophomores.
Warriors head coach Mark Weycker seemed particularly upbeat about the collection of players making their high school debuts.
“This will be one of those years where we’re so skilled in our freshman class, they will mimic, offensively, what the varsity is doing,” Weycker said.
Keep in mind the varsity squad includes the likes of standout Quan Rucker, a receiver who has committed to Wake Forest but will play quarterback for the Warriors as a senior.
