SOFTBALL: West Iredell 1, R-S Central 0 (12 innings)

Pennell, Chapman come up big as Warriors escape in playoffs

FROM STAFF REPORTS
Hannah Pennell pitched a 12-inning gem and Kaylyn Chapman came through with some timely hitting Tuesday to lead West Iredell past R-S Central 1-0 in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Pennell went the distance, allowing just five hits and walking one batter while striking out 12 in the victory.

Chapman blasted a triple in the top of the 12th inning to plate the only run of the game. Kara Dawkins scored on the play after reaching base on an error.

Amber Miller, Mary Keever and Elizabeth Walden each had a hit for the Warriors (16-6), who will face Enka in Friday’s second round.
