Soccer team sets sight on league title in ‘09
By Brian Meadows
The season drew to a close Wednesday night for Statesville’s girls soccer team following a 2-1 loss to Kings Mountain in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
The same teams piled up goals against one another in their season opener, which ended in a 6-6 draw.
“It was a little more realistic this time,” coach Jennifer Husbands said.
The reality was Kings Mountain (21-1-2) moved on, and Statesville (11-8-2) went home.
But the future looks bright over at Greyhound Hollow. Fifteen of this year’s 20 players were sophomores or freshmen. The Greyhounds graduate only two regulars in the lineup.
Statesville will be more skilled and more experienced next season at every position, particularly forward with the return of Sarah Ann Waugh, the team’s leading goal scorer.
A big arsenal has Statesville thinking big picture.
“The girls want to win conference next year,” Husbands said. “After next year, it’s not going to mean nearly as much, because we lose Mooresville and Lake Norman.
“It would be great if (the sophomores) do it their senior year, don’t get me wrong, but if they do, everyone is just going to go, ‘Well, they only won it because Lake Norman and Mooresville are gone.’ ”
