South golfer Brown in the hunt for state title

By BRAD NORMAN

South Iredell sophomore Clay Brown fired a 1-over-72 Monday at Longleaf Golf and Country Club and is in serious contention for an individual 2A state golf championship.

Brown is tied with three other golfers for second place overall after Monday’s round. An individual champion and a team champ will be crowned today after a final round of 18 holes.

Cardinal Gibbons’ Ryan Lavelle shot a 70 and is the individual leader. Lavelle is two strokes ahead of Brown, Mayodan McMichael’s Jay Brown and West Henderson’s Danny Dippel.

Five players carded a 75 and are tied for fifth place.

Cardinal Gibbons is in first place overall as a team with a 302. Ledford and West Henderson are tied for second, each with a 305.

Brown finished with two birdies and three bogeys on the par-71 course.

“Clay’s driver was really, really good,” Vikings coach David Foster said. “He was just ripping that drive. He really played very good.”

Brown hit every fairway and didn’t miss many greens. His improved short game is also paying dividends on this particular course.

“There are some big, big greens,” Foster said. “He really putted well, too.”

Brown will tee off at 8:10 a.m. today.
