Lake Norman’s Travis Taylor won last year’s Iredell County golf championship after breaking his driver.

He repeated as champion Tuesday with a broken hand.

With his right hand puffy and swollen, Taylor shot a 1-over-73 on a blustery afternoon to win his second consecutive county championship.

He birdied three of the first four holes and survived a tumultuous pair of holes toward the end.

“My hand hurts a lot,” Taylor said. “It accidentally got slammed in a car door. The doctor at first told me I shouldn’t play, but I have a lot of medicine for it.”

Taylor also led Lake Norman to a first-place team finish. The Wildcats finished with a 310.

Senior Greg Simms, Lake Norman’s No. 6 player, shot a 76 and classmate Will Cotter carded a 77.

“It was windy out there, but both of our seniors came through,” Lake Norman coach Scott Sarvis said. “It was a good way for them to finish out their careers against local competition.”

Statesville took second place as a team with a 319.

Jimmy Sappenfield, the Greyhounds’ No. 4 golfer, shot his best round of the year and took second place individually with a 75.

“Everything finally came together,” Sappenfield. “One thing would be awful every time this season. Today, it all came together.”

John Lewis (80) and Ben Morrison (81) finished in the top 10 individually for Statesville.

Clay Brown fired a 77 to pace South Iredell and Josh Nelson’s 78 led Mooresville.

South and Mooresville tied for third place, each with a 331, while West Iredell was fifth with 350 and North Iredell was sixth with 416.

“I didn’t play that good,” Brown said. “I only hit five greens. My chipping and putting were better, but my irons and driver were not too good.”

Brown, Nelson and Taylor were the top-seeded golfers and played together throughout the day.

Taylor led the group by three strokes after just five holes, but Nelson, the North Piedmont 3A player of the year, made it interesting toward the end.

After hitting to the fringe in two shots on the par-5 17th hole, Nelson made a gorgeous putt that dropped in for eagle to inch two strokes closer to the lead.

But Nelson pulled out his driver the next hole and sent his ball careening out of bounds.

“I played decent, I just made poor errors on a couple holes,” Nelson said. “I didn’t have a feel for my short shots, either.”

Taylor double-bogeyed the 18th hole and followed that up with a triple-bogey on the first hole.

With his group ending at the fifth hole, Taylor made par the next two holes and buried a nice birdie putt on hole No. 4 to get some breathing room.

“I’m still really upset about those two holes,” Taylor said with a grimace. “I was trying to beat my school record (of 69) I shot last year. That was my goal.
“But I am happy with a 73 and happy I won it again.”
