Lake Norman girls soccer coach Jon Mertes won’t have to do much prior to tonight’s game to fire his players up.
The third-ranked Wildcats (24-1-1) host unbeaten and top-ranked Asheville Roberson (27-0) in the 3A West Regional final at 6 p.m., and they know what’s on the line.
It’s the “chance to play to go to the state championship game,” Mertes said. “This is as far as the girls team has gone (in the playoffs) at Lake Norman, and to be able to play on our home field against a team that hasn’t lost in 27 games, if that doesn’t get you motivated, nothing will.”
Roberson advanced to the regional final with a 1-0 win Friday over Charlotte Catholic.
The Wildcats needed to settle their quarterfinal game Saturday against Marvin Ridge in a penalty-kick shootout, because there was no score after 80 regulation minutes, two 10-minute overtimes and two five-minute sudden-death periods.
Lake Norman outdueled Marvin Ridge 3-1 in PKs to prevail. Goalkeeper Mollie Zimmer made one save and the Mavericks misfired on two of their other three kicks. Lake Norman shooters were, for the most part, spot-on. Lake Norman didn’t even need to send its fifth shooter to kick.
“We’ve been practicing it for two or three weeks, so we kind of knew who our top-five shooters would be right off the bat,” Mertes said.
Ideally, Lake Norman would prefer to avoid a similar scenario against Roberson, but it may be necessary.
The Rams have proven extremely difficult to score against this season. They have allowed just two goals, while pocketing 135 themselves.
Roberson blasted Northwest Cabarrus 7-1 in the first round of the playoffs. Northwest Cabarrus handed the Wildcats their only loss, 2-1.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but we’ve been looking forward to this all season,” said sophomore Kaitlyn Ferguson, who buried the victory-clinching penalty kick Saturday to lift the Wildcats into regional final for the first time in school history. “We’re glad to have them at home. It will be awesome.”
