MOORESVILLE — Lake Norman threatened to upset the top-ranked team in country Wednesday night in the 3A West Regional final, but Asheville Roberson passed the test and is moving on.
The Rams (28-0), rated No. 1 in nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, scored late in the first half and early in the second half to prevail 2-1 and advance to this weekend’s state championship game. They will meet White Oak or Western Guilford.
“We definitely gave them a game,” Lake Norman junior Sarah Tang said.
Marissa McCord scored off a throw-in just over 10 minutes before halftime, and Katherine Ellis made it 2-0 less than two minutes after the break when she scored unassisted on a counter attack.
Lake Norman (24-2-1) sustained constant pressure from that moment on.
“We had so many opportunities,” Lake Norman senior Caroline Moffett said.
The Wildcats converted one in the 47th minute to prevent the Rams from extending their state record for shutouts in a season to 26.
Hannah Graham played the ball down the left sideline to Tang, who headed the ball forward to continue her run. Tang dribbled in on goal, defender in tow, and booted a shot far post and past Rams keeper Rachel Jennings.
It was only the third goal Roberson allowed all season.
“I was determined to get my foot on the ball and shoot,” Tang said.
With the tally, Lake Norman found its second wind and kept pushing for the equalizer.
The Wildcats almost got it, too, in the 71st minute. Graham’s high-arching shot from the left wing bounced in between the bend of the right post and crossbar and landed in front of the goal.
Moffett charged the unattended ball, but her rip from about seven yards was turned aside by a Rams defender standing in the right place at the right time.
“I really thought I was going to score there,” Moffett said. “Just didn’t happen.”
Roberson thwarted the comeback bid, to the relief of Rams coach Rob Wilcher.
“Lake Norman gave us all we wanted and more,” Wilcher said. “We were able to hang on.”
