SOFTBALL: South Iredell 10, Bessemer City 0 (5 innings)
Vikings coast to victory
By Brad Norman
South Iredell was one part efficient, one part ruthless.
The Vikings scored 10 runs on nine hits in the first inning and cruised to a 10-0, five-inning win Tuesday over Bessemer City in a game that lasted just over 45 minutes.
“It seems like, since I’ve been here, we’ve kind of struggled against Bessemer City a little bit,” South coach Josh Bumgarner said. “They’ve always been kind of knock-down, drag-out games. During pregame, we stressed leaving no doubt. I felt like that’s what we did in the first inning.”
South (10-12 overall, 7-6 Southern Piedmont 1A-2A) had seven consecutive batters get on base in the first inning and sent a total of 14 batters to the plate.
That left sophomore pitcher Kelsey Spangler at ease on the mound.
“It’s a lot easier to pitch with a 10-0 lead, that’s for sure,” Spangler said. “You have a lot of leeway behind you. It’s not nerve-wracking.”
South managed just one more hit the rest of the game, but Spangler cruised. She picked up the complete-game win, allowing five hits and striking out four.
Bessemer City (4-9 SPC) made it a bit interesting with one out in the fifth inning by hitting three consecutive singles, but Spangler buckled down and struck out the final two batters to end the game.
“I didn’t want to have to play another inning,” Spangler said with a grin. “We wanted to get out of here quicker.”
Kayla Jones hit a triple and drove in three runs for the Vikings, and Kathleen Pasquarella got on base three times and also had three runs batted in.
The Vikings entered Tuesday’s game tied with Lincolnton for third place in the conference and one game ahead of East Lincoln.
Only two of those teams will get an automatic bid for the playoffs. The Vikings will play at East Lincoln in Thursday’s season finale.
“We definitely have to win this next game Thursday against East Lincoln,” Spangler said. “We beat them last time, but we can’t take anything for granted at all.”
