Warriors’ win sets up big second-round showdown
By Brian Meadows
The sun may be the only thing hotter than West’s softball team.
The Warriors won for the 11th time in 12 games Tuesday when they blanked Southwestern Con-ference top seed R-S Central 1-0 in the opening round of the 3A state playoffs.
Kaylyn Chapman’s triple in the top of the 12th inning scored the winning run, and Hannah Pennell struck out 12.
The Warriors (16-6) have another tough game in front of them Friday, when they travel to Candler to face Enka (18-3), ranked No. 8 in 3A.
The Jets are the No. 2 seed from the Mountain Athletic Conference, but whipped MAC regular-season champion Asheville Roberson 11-1 in the league tournament final Saturday. Jamie Burwell tossed a no-hitter in the Jets’ first-round playoff win over Forestview.
